I've made a few changes to the five day ride in North Central Kentucky. Originally it started in Verona which had minimal areas to park. Changing this to Crittenden allows for more services and possible parking, with acquired permission of course! This changes the first and last days of the ride. I also changed the Shaker Village-Cynthiana day terminating it in Cynthiana instead of North of town. There are a couple of B&Bs in town plus the eateries are there also. The Evergreen Motel North of town is a mom & pop place which is clean but old. The owner is very accommodating however!
The route is remote with very little services. Most days we packed snacks, lunches and water along with a few repair items. It's a great route for escaping the city just a few miles from home.
The following five routes make up the 330 mile loop starting from and returning to Crittenden:
Crittenden to Frankfort
Frankfort to Bardstown
Bardstown to Shaker Village (Harrodsburg)
Shaker Village (Harrodsburg) to Cynthiana
Cynthiana to Crittenden
In addition to the routes on this site I also have published a map book containing 91 counties of Indiana showing paved roads and suggested routes for bicyclists. The book, "Back Roads of Indiana" is available at Hodson's Bay Company West Lafayette Indiana. 765-743-3506
Qualifier for these routes!
The following routes were developed over years of biking in Indiana and now Kentucky. The majority of the routes are on rural paved roads with minimal secondary highways to connect the county roads. Using these routes you'll almost always find that the distances between two points is more than taking a highway however the scenery is almost always better as well as lower traffic. Hopefully you'll enjoy the great cycling in Indiana or Kentucky and if possible provide feedback on your trip.
I am not making any recommendations nor can I say that these routes are free from road hazards or dangers from traffic. Users of these routes will find them scenic and remote however only the user can assure they are safe on any public road.
